Sir Edward Leigh has condemned illegal cross-Channel migrants using human rights law to evade justice.
Speaking in the House of Commons, the Gainsborough Member of Parliament praised the Home Secretary as "only one with the guts, determination and legal knowledge to reform our ridiculous human rights law, and detain these people and send them back".
"That is the only way we are going to deal with this issue," Sir Edward said. "Those who constantly make these personal attacks on somebody who has made just one mistake and apologised should remember the old motto: understand and judge not."
Sir Edward asked the Home Secretary whether she has the determination to amend the relevant law.
Responding, Suella Braverman MP said we "need" to change the law.
"There are too many people coming here and making spurious human rights claims, protracting the asylum application system. They know they can put in appeal after appeal. They can challenge decisions and spend a lot of time here in full knowledge of the fact that they are not genuine asylum seekers."
We need to stop human rights laws from being abused by people who are economic migrants, not genuine refugees. pic.twitter.com/70zg2Ej9X2
